Orthodontic Treatment For Adults

When most people think of braces, they picture a child with a mouth full of metal. However, this common stereotype couldn’t be further from the truth. While orthodontics may be most well-known for their use in adolescents, more and more adults are turning to braces to correct dental issues and improve their smiles. At Cherry Orthodontics, we are devoted to helping our young patients, as well as our adult patients, with their smiles. We proudly provide orthodontics for adults in the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, area.

The need for braces may seem daunting, especially if you are well into adulthood; they are an excellent way to help restore your smile and fix various problems, from an overbite or underbite to misaligned teeth. With our fantastic dentist, Dr. William Cherry, and his team, you can get the personalized care your smile needs.

What are Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a form of dental treatment aimed at correcting the positioning of the teeth and jaws. This treatment aims to improve a patient’s bite, align the teeth, and create a better balance within the mouth. While orthodontics may seem like a purely cosmetic treatment, it’s important to note that correcting tooth and jaw alignment can also significantly impact oral health. This includes reducing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even jaw problems.

Why Adults Would Need Orthodontic Treatment

A common misconception is that orthodontics are only suitable for children and teenagers. However, more and more adults are turning to orthodontic treatment to improve their smiles and correct dental problems. There are several reasons why adults may choose to undergo orthodontic treatment, including:

  • Misaligned teeth
  • Gaps in the teeth
  • Overbite or underbite
  • Jaw problems

Additionally, some adults may have had orthodontic treatment as children but failed to wear a retainer, resulting in their teeth shifting out of place over time.

Difference Between Adult Orthodontics and Orthodontics for Youth

Regarding orthodontic treatment, there are several differences between adult and children’s orthodontics.

  • Fully Developed Smiles: One of the main differences is that adult teeth have already fully developed and are less malleable than those of children and teens. This means that adult orthodontics may take longer than children’s and require a more tailored approach to treatment.
  • Gum Disease or Tooth Decay Concerns: Additionally, adult orthodontic patients are more likely to have underlying dental issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, which may need to be addressed before orthodontic treatment can begin.

Orthodontic Types for Adults

Adults will often require different orthodontic appliances than children and teens. Types of orthodontics we offer for adults include:

  1. Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces, but instead of metal brackets, they consist of clear or tooth-colored brackets. These brackets blend seamlessly with natural teeth, making them ideal for patients who crave a discrete look.
  2. Invisible Braces: Invisible braces are also known as clear aligners made of plastic material that fit snugly to the teeth, gradually applying pressure to align them. Instead of tightening wires and brackets, the clear aligners are replaced every two weeks to move teeth into their position slowly.
  3. Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces but attached to the back of the teeth. Instead of running the risk of breaking clear aligners or brackets, lingual braces provide a subtle and discreet way to straighten your teeth. With lingual braces, no one will know you are wearing braces unless you tell them.
  4. Self-ligating Braces: Self-ligating braces are similar to traditional braces but don’t require rubber bands or metal ties to hold the wire onto the brackets. Instead, self-ligating braces use a specialized clip or valve to move the teeth more freely, reducing tension and friction on the brackets and wires.

Traditional Metal Braces: The standard metal braces are the most common braces used to correct dental problems and have been around for over a century. Traditional metal braces come with metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands.
